Cleaning Your Aluminium Doors and Windows

Aluminium doors and windows are a great option for any home. They are durable, lightweight, easy to install, simple to maintain and have a longer lifespan than wood, PVC or other metal options. Whilst aluminium does prove much easier to maintain than other materials, it’s a good idea to enhance the life, appearance and functionality of your aluminium doors and windows with regular cleaning.

How Often to Clean Your Aluminium Windows and Doors

If your aluminium window or door has a powder coated finish, clean it at least once every three to four months to keep it looking as good as new. Start your cleaning from the top and work your way down to the bottom of the window or door. This prevents any dirt spilling down into areas you’ve already cleaned.

When cleaning aluminium windows and doors that are older, the cleaning process needs to be a thorough and more frequent. The lack of powdercoated finish on older aluminium windows means they’re exposed and vulnerable to weather elements and more prone to wear and tear.

Gentle Wash

Simply use soapy and warm water. There is no need to use cleaning products with strong chemicals. Some harsher agents could potentially damage the finish. It’s important your detergent is non-alkaline having a PH level of 7 or less to avoid the risk of damage. Dip a soft cloth, ideally microfibre material, into the soapy water, and start the cleaning process.

Check for signs of wear and damage as you clean. There is no need to be too vigorous in your cleaning as aluminium is generally easy to clean. Remember to clean any joints, grooves, hidden spots and hard to reach places where dirt and debris can build up. Sliding windows can have nooks where grime builds up.

Rinse, Lubricate and Dry

After washing, rinse all the glass and aluminium surfaces with cloths, ensuring you soak up any excess water. For the glass, it’s worth finishing it off with a squeegee, for a streak-free result. Give your window frame and door a final wipe down moving steadily with a cloth in one direction. This will create a consistent finish.

Now is also an ideal time to apply lubricant to help your doors and windows open smoothly. Make sure the hinges and locking system are completely dry before doing so. Once you’re satisfied that you’ve given your aluminium windows and doors a thorough clean, dry them using a soft clean cloth for a sparkling finish.
